Who we Are

Located in College Park, MD, across from the University of Maryland, we are a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America, true to the Scriptures, faithful to the Gospel, and committed to the Great Commission.

We recognize that we are not our own; we have been bought with a price, and thus we belong to Christ and to one another. This reconciliation with God as his beloved sons and daughters finds expression in the way we care for one another as brothers and sisters in the body of Christ.

We understand that our most important ministry is public worship. In worship, God meets us corporately, feeds us spiritually and knits us together as one people.

We purpose to reach out with the gospel, in both word and deed, to those perishing without Christ. Aspiring to return glory to him in all that we do, we seek to cultivate in our membership a posture of servanthood that looks to the needs of others — in our immediate community and to the ends of the earth.

We serve in the strength and through the gifts with which God empowers his people. As we do, we trust that God’s people will be built up in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

More about the Presbyterian Church in America

The Presbyterian Church in America has a strong commitment to evangelism, missionary work at home and abroad, and to Christian education.

From its inception, the church has determined its purpose to be “faithful to the Scriptures, true to the reformed faith, and obedient to the Great Commission.”

The PCA has made a firm commitment on the doctrinal standards which had been significant in presbyterianism since 1645, namely the Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechisms.

These doctrinal standards express the distinctives of the Calvinistic or Reformed tradition.

Among the distinctive doctrines of the Westminster Standards and of Reformed tradition is the unique authority of the Bible.

The reformers based all of their claims on “sola scriptura,” the Scriptures alone. This included the doctrine of their inspiration which is a special act of the Holy Spirit by which He guided the writers of the books of Scriptures (in their original autographs) so that their words should convey the thoughts He wished conveyed, bear a proper relation to the thoughts of other inspired books, and be kept free from error of fact, of doctrine, and of judgment — all of which were to be an infallible rule of faith and life. Historically, the concept of infallibility has included the idea of inerrancy.

The PCA is one of the faster growing denominations in the United States, with over 1450 churches and missions throughout the USA and Canada.

The PCA has over 350,000 communicant and non-communicant members.

The influence of the PCA extends far beyond the walls of the local church. Mission to the World has 519 career missionaries in almost 60 nations of the world, 169 two-year missionaries, and over 6500 short term missionaries. PCA churches support an additional 690 career missionaries, covering over 130 nations.

History of Wallace Presbyterian Church

The first worship service of Wallace Presbyterian Church was held on April 10, 1910, in Northwest Washington, D.C.  Originally named Knox Memorial United Presbyterian Church, it was founded with 20 members.  Today, 108 years later, the church remains committed to its motto of “The Word of God from Pulpit and Classroom.”

As the Maryland suburbs began to burgeon in the 1950’s, Wallace relocated in 1959 to Hyattsville.  In 1981, Wallace joined the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA).  In both the D.C. and Maryland locations, hundreds of members of Wallace were called by God to service in the pastorate, to missions, or to other full-time ministry.  Wallace also has planted four daughter churches beginning in 1947. These congregations are still faithful to the Gospel today in Silver Spring, Bowie, Fulton, and Laurel.

In 2009, Wallace dedicated its new campus and buildings in College Park — directly across the street from the University of Maryland — and many students and faculty are part of the life of our church.  As believers from every nation, tribe, and tongue began to move to the inner suburbs of Washington in the 80’s and 90’s, Wallace PCA welcomed them into our church family.  Today, Wallace is one of the most diverse congregations in the PCA, having members from all six populated continents.

Wallace PCA is committed to the authority of Scripture, the historic faith as expressed in the Apostles’ Creed and the Westminster Standards, and the Great Commission which calls us to reach out with the Gospel.  Our mission is to create an environment that is conducive to its people growing in grace and advancing the Kingdom of God.
